Former US State Secretary Mike Pompeo demands US to declare Taiwan as a sovereign nation

Taipei/Washington/Beijing: – Former US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo demanded ‘The United States should declare Taiwan as a free and sovereign country. This has nothing to do with the future freedom of Taiwan. We only have to accept the reality through this. There is no need to announce Taiwanese independence and it is already an independent country. The name of this country is the Republic of Taiwan. There is a need that the US government and population accepted this political, diplomatic and sovereign reality.’

Media and analysts are repeatedly warning of a possible Chinese attack on Ukraine against the background of the Russia-Ukraine war. Therefore, the United States has initiated steps to strengthen its cooperation with Taiwan. A few days ago, the United States had despatched its destroyer in the Taiwanese marine sector. The United States has announced a new Indo-Pacific policy. The issue of Taiwanese security is addressed in the policy. The Indo-Pacific policy also states that the United States will provide Taiwan with the necessary assistance to build its self-defence capability. A US delegation visited Taiwan. Against the same background, former US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo visited Taiwan. Pompeo met Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen during his visit. He made this demand to award diplomatic recognition to Taiwan during a speech addressing a think tank.

At this time, he also claimed that taking over Taiwan would strengthen the grip of President Xi Jinping over China. The Pompeo demand was strongly welcomed in Taiwan and US analysts and Congressmen also have pointed to the issue. But China fired a strong salvo of criticism. The Chinese foreign ministry said ‘Pompeo is a former diplomat and he has no standing today. He is making meaningless statements and they will never be successful.’

Meanwhile, Frank Kendall III, United States Secretary of the Air Force, claimed that China poses the biggest threat to the security of the United States. Kendall said ‘The United States will soon be announcing its defence policy. Whatever may be the developments around, there is no disagreement that China poses the biggest challenge.’ While this statement of Kendall is being received, reports of the US air force conducting comprehensive exercises at a Japanese airbase have also been received.

China has announced an extensive naval exercise near the Vietnamese marine limit against the background of these US activities. Chinese navy clarified that the exercises would last for a week.
