European Nordic countries plan for joint fleets of fighter jets to counter Russian aggression  

Nordic countriesCopenhagen/ Oslo: Europe’s ‘Nordic’ countries have decided to come together to respond to Russia’s growing aggression in the wake of the conflict in Ukraine. Accordingly, a single fleet of fighter planes from Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark will be created. Danish officials said this fleet will have nearly 2500 fighter planes from four countries.

Nordic countriesIn the wake of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, US and NATO have begun efforts to increase military deployment and defence capabilities in European countries. For this, the process of giving membership in NATO to Finland and Sweden has been started. After that, indications have also been given to set up and deploy NATO bases in these countries. On the other hand, European countries that are members of NATO have also taken steps to increase defence cooperation with these countries. 

Both Denmark and Norway are members of NATO. At the same time, these countries are also part of the group known as ‘Nordic’ countries in Europe. In this background, Denmark and Norway have proposed to unite with Finland and Sweden in the field of air defence to increase the coordination between the defence forces. According to this proposal, a ‘Unified Nordic Air Defence’ will be established. The relevant officials said this joint air force would include around 250 fighter jets from four countries. 

Meanwhile, Danish officials have confirmed that the ‘Unified Nordic Air Defense’ of the Nordic countries will operate as the largest air force in Europe. It is said that this air force will include ‘Gripen’, ‘F-16’, ‘F/A-18 Hornet’, ‘F-35’ fighter aircraft. It has also come to light that there is a provision for integrated command and control, operational planning, flexible deployment, joint surveillance and training in the ‘Unified Nordic Air Defence’.
