Canberra: ‘Ukraine today could be East Asia tomorrow. We are a frontline state facing challenging circumstances in the dangerous neighbourhood of Southeast Asia,’ Japan’s Ambassador to Australia, Shingo Yamagami, made aware of the threat to Japan from China without mentioning it directly. In such a situation, nuclear submarines will be very important to counter this threat; the Japanese Ambassador reiterated the statement of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kashida that the nuclear submarine would prove vital to counter this threat.
Ambassador Yamagami spoke at Canberra, Australia’s ‘Advancing AUKUS’ conference. The US, the UK and Australia had formed the AUKUS organisation, and there were claims that Japan could also participate. However, it may take more time. Before that, Ambassador Yamagami made a very important statement that Japan was all set to welcome the nuclear submarine Australia would receive from the US in its port. As Chinese ships and fighter jets intrude into Taiwan’s maritime and airspace, the threat from China to Japan’s shoreline, which is 100 kilometres away from Taiwan, has increased further. Therefore, Japan warned that China’s attack on Taiwan would be an attack on Japan. Against that backdrop, the Japanese Ambassador has expressed readiness to welcome Australia’s nuclear submarine to Japanese ports.
