Indian claim for a permanent seat in the UNSC may become stronger after becoming the most populous country: John Wilmath, Director of UN Population DivisionJohn Wilmath, Director of the UN Population Division, who prepared this report, raised the issue of a permanent UN Security Council seat for India. Certain Indian claims will become stronger after becoming the most populous country in the world. Wilmath made a statement pleasing the Indians that one of them is the permanent membership of the UN Security Council. Wilmath indicated that India also would be able to play a more constructive role in the United Nations. The current Indian population is 1,412 billion and the Chinese population is 1.426 billion.

The UN report claims that India will surpass China in terms of population in 2023, becoming the world’s most populous country. The high percentage of youth will be a decisive factor in respect of the Indian population. The Indian economy also will reap the benefits of this. At the same time, the country will have to address the problems arising due to population growth. These include the challenges like providing a tremendous impetus to the economy and increasing employment. The country will also have to provide the necessary educational and healthcare facilities to this growing population.

While doing all this, India will also have to control the population growth. Wilmath pointed out that China had implemented extreme steps to control the population growth. The ill-effects of the measures are becoming apparent and the number of senior citizens has increased tremendously as compared to the global average. In comparison, the process is being implemented more efficiently in India and it will not face the problems to the extent China has faced.
