An event held in Brampton, Canada, on 4 June celebrated the assassination of former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi. The Khalistani based in Canada had incited India by drawing a rally during this. Later, the High Commission of Canada appointed in India denied this and stated that there was no place for such activities in Canada. But his statement seemed to be just an attempt to handle the situation. Consequently, surrounded by difficulties, the Government of Canada started blaming and accusing India of the contrary.

Canada’s NSA, Jody Thomas, claimed that Russia, Iran and India also interfere in Canada. Also, Jody Thomas targeted India by claiming it threatened Canada’s economic security. Earlier in March, the Khalistani separatists attacked the Indian High Commission in Canada. A strong reaction to this from India had surfaced. But, it has been clear even earlier that the Khalistani separatists were getting a free hand in Canada.

Against this background, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar was questioned about the allegations made by the National Security Advisor of Canada on India. In response, Jaishankar reprimanded the allegations made by Canada on India by saying that ‘Ulta chor kotwal ko daante’ (the pot calling the kettle black) was on the same lines. He said Canada shelters Khalistani separatist and terrorist elements on its soil, which will be fatal for India-Canada bilateral relations. At the same time, this issue will prove to be equally catastrophic for Canada as well, EAM Jaishankar warned.

Moreover, Jaishankar said that Canada had made such mistakes in history, which have harmed the country itself. He added that this country is still not ready to learn from history. Jaishankar indicated that along with Canada, UK and Australia will have to say the same to India. He further said that India had warned Canada at intervals against the activities of Khalistani separatists based in Canada. But, due to the politics of vote banks there, the Canadian government has been ignoring the actions of these separatists. He added that apart from this, to please these separatists, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also adopted an anti-India role many times.
