India prepares to reduce trade deficit with RussiaAfter the Ukraine conflict broke out, the US and the West imposed strict sanctions on Russia. This has started affecting Russia’s manufacturing sector and Russia has sought assistance from India for various parts required for Russia’s production of other essential products. According to this, news has been released claiming that Russia has handed over a list of around 500 products to India. India has also prepared a list of products that can be supplied to Russia and demanded that Russia should make its market available to India.

Moreover, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar gave this information in a joint press conference with Germany’s foreign minister. After the conflict in Ukraine, India started buying large quantities of fuel from Russia. Also, India has been buying arms and defence materials from Russia for a long time. Due to this, India has to bear a huge deficit in bilateral trade between India and Russia. India has appealed for the Russian market to be available for its products to cover this deficit. There are clear indications that India will accept this demand from Russia. At the same time, while speaking in the said press conference, the Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar explained that India would also continue to purchase fuel from Russia in the future.

Furthermore, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also made aware that India is buying fuel according to its demand and Indian fuel companies take this decision keeping in mind the developments in the market. Meanwhile, European countries demanded that India not buy fuel from Russia after the Ukraine conflict broke out. European countries accused India of purchasing fuel from Russia and providing money to Russia to attack Ukraine. But as much fuel as India buys from Russia in a month, European countries buy from Russia in half a day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar gave a befitting reply to the objection of European countries.
