Rise in the number of illegal immigrants entering Europe

Brussels: There has been a dramatic increase in the number of illegal immigrants entering Europe. European agency ‘Frontex’ informed that in the first nine months of 2022, as many as 225 thousand million refugees had entered European countries. This is the most significant increase since 2016. This record increase has come against the background of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and growing instability in Asia and Africa. In 2015, more than 1 million immigrants entered Europe illegally.

In the first nine months of 2022, more than 2,28,240 immigrants entered European countries illegally. The number of illegal entrants is 70% more this year than last year. ‘This is the highest number since illegal intrusions recorded in 2016,’ Frontex cited. Frontex has stated in its report that the highest number of immigrants came this year from countries in the Balkan region.

Moreover, immigrants entering Europe illegally include citizens from Syria, Afghanistan, Turkey, Tunisia, Egypt and Bangladesh. Frontex said in its report that more than a hundred thousand immigrants came from the Balkan region and more than 65,000 through the Mediterranean route. It does not include refugees from Ukraine. In the last decade, due to the ‘Open Door Policy’ implemented under German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s leadership, many immigrants started entering Europe. In the last two years, aggressive decisions were taken to curb the infiltration as the discontent intensified against it. But against the background of Corona and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the European Union is once again trying to open its doors to immigrants. The increasing numbers of immigrants are indicative of the same.

European society, values and culture are threatened by the influx of refugees from Africa and Middle Eastern countries into Europe. Therefore, the European population’s discontent is increasing, and its serious political and social consequences are also being seen in some countries. Right-wing parties that take an aggressive stance against immigrants are getting increasing support and some countries are even passing laws to stop immigrants.
