There was a powerful explosion in Dubai, the busiest city in the UAE, at nearly 11.00 pm on Wednesday. As per locals, the sound of the blast was heard as far as 22 kilometres from the site of the explosion. Some residents complained that the waves of explosion rocked their buildings and houses. The local agencies informed that there was an explosion on a container ship docked in the Jebel Ali port.

The security agencies said that there were no casualties in the explosion and the fire that ensued. All the employees on the ship were successfully rescued after the fire started. The local agencies expressed a possibility that this explosion was due to the flammable substance carried in a container. The Dubai agencies avoided elaborating further, saying such incidents happen in the summer months. The details of losses caused by the fire are also not available.

The fire on the ship was doused by Thursday morning. UAE energy and construction minister Suhail Al Mazroui said that the movement of other freight ships is going on unhindered. Mazroui clarified that care would be taken that no damages are caused to the environment in the Dubai marine sector.

Jebel Ali is a crucial port for ships coming from the Indian subcontinent, Africa and Asian countries. The port has four docks to handle the biggest container ships. Jebel Ali is the busiest freight port in the Gulf. The seriousness of the incident on this busy port increases further.

Meanwhile, only last week, a rocket attack had been launched on a freight ship entering the UAE marine region. The Israeli media has expressed a suspicion that Iran was behind this attack. This is claimed to be a part of the hidden war being fought between Iran and Israel. Iran and its affiliated terrorist organisations disapprove of the cooperation developing between Israel and UAE. Iran has openly threatened UAE over this matter.
