European countries to increase use of coal as an alternative to Russian fuelLast week, Russia cut down fuel supply to the leading European country, Germany, forwarding technical reasons. At the same time, companies from France, Italy and Austria also claimed that the fuel supplies from Russia had been cut down. Against this background, the rates for fuel gas spurted by 60% in Europe, reaching USD 1,500 per cubic metre. The European economies are in trouble as there is a possibility of a further price increase.

As no other options are available for supplying fuels to the European population and the industry, European countries have finally decided to use coal for energy production. German Commerce Minister Robert Habeck justified the policy to start using coal, saying, ‘Although this is an excruciating decision, it is necessary for the current situation. If moves are not initiated right away, there is a possibility of being held at ransom on the diplomatic level by the end of the year.’

The fuels imported from Russia also include coal. Last year, the European countries paid 4 billion Euros to Russia for coal imports.
