On Thursday afternoon, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that the agreement was finalised with the European Union. Following the tweet by Johnson, the European Union too had confirmed the report. British Prime Minister Johnson called for a press conference and gave brief information regarding the deal. The British Prime Minister, who claimed to have been released from the bondage of the Union, said, ‘The United Kingdom has once again taken charge of its laws and future.’ Johnson added, ‘The United Kingdom will be out of the customs union and single market from the 1st of January. Henceforth, the British Parliament will formulate the laws, and the British judges will pass the verdicts. The rights of the European courts will end.’

While addressing the European countries, the British Prime Minister assured that the United Kingdom would continue to be their friend, partner and supporter. He also claimed that this agreement is the beginning of stability and certainty. Former British Prime Minister David Cameron expressed satisfaction over the deal. Whereas, Nigel Farage, an ardent supporter of Brexit, welcomed the agreement saying that the battle is now over. But Scotland, the main province in the United Kingdom, expressed displeasure showing that everything is not well.

Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon made bitter criticism, ‘Many promises made regarding fishing have been broken in the agreement. The population of Scotland had voted in favour of continuing with the Union. But their vote was ignored. This is not an easy Brexit, and the provisions are harsh. In the coming times, the British economy and society will be devastated.’ At this time, Sturgeon once again highlighted the issue of Scottish independence and claimed that Scotland, as an independent country, had a right to decide its future. She also warned that Scotland would become independent and join the European Union.

As per the agreement signed between the United Kingdom and the European Union, critical British demands regarding legal systems and trade have been accepted. But for fishing rights, a transition period of five and a half years has been defined. At the same time, both the parties have agreed to continue to cooperate in counter-terrorism actions and criminal proceedings. Sources indicated that the British companies operating in Europe might take a hit, to a certain extent, due to the agreement. It is also being said that there is some uncertainty regarding how and to what level will the implementation start from the 1st of January.

Although the British Prime Minister claimed to have taken firm control, the European Union reacted that they have remained the stronger party. Therefore, as per analysts, there could be conflicts in the initial period of implementation.
