‘Data Protection Bill’ tabled in 2019 must get clearance at the earliest: Indian Defence Chief, Gen. Bipin Rawat

Thiruvananthapuram: In 2019, the ‘Data Protection Bill’ was tabled in parliament. This bill must get clearance at the earliest because theft of data, i.e. information, has become a common phenomenon. Indian Defence Chief General Bipin Rawat cited this problem and highlighted the threat of data theft, which means robbing of information in the virtual world. While addressing the 14th edition of the c0c0n cyber security meeting organised by Kerala police, General Rawat spoke about it.

Moreover, it is imperative to establish utmost coordination between cyber security experts and various government departments to protect digital assets. Currently, India does not have an independent law for cyber security. But, presently, planning such a law is vital for safeguarding virtual space. Besides, various government agencies handle issues related to cyber security. The Indian Defence Forces have cyber experts and state police have also activated their cyber cells. Thus, these cyber departments can work together along with cyber departments of the ministry and private companies and pursue a common goal to protect digital assets. Moreover, General Rawat also drew attention to how cyber crimes have increased, especially after the rise of digital payments in the country.

Furthermore, protecting data has become a sensitive issue and the leading world countries have introduced stringent laws over data protection. However, even though a bill was tabled in 2019 for cyber security in India, it has not been cleared to become law yet.

Besides, the cyber crimes in India rose by 500% after the Coronavirus pandemic. Cyber criminals are taking advantage to rob money at large and cause unrest. In such a situation, General Bipin Rawat praised the Kerala police force for taking the initiative and campaigning against cybercrimes.

Moreover, the first step on the way to victory is to recognise the threat. Hence at the very outset, I must congratulate Kerala police for taking the initiative to recognise and acknowledge this all-important non-contact domain of warfare, General Rawat further said.
