The shootout took place during a training session for foreign soldiers, at the Pensacola base, in the state of Florida. Saudi Arabian soldier named Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani started firing, shouting ‘The United States is a country of evil’. Four people were killed and eight were injured in the shootout. The US study group ‘Site’, closely monitoring the websites of terror groups, claimed that Alshamrani was a staunch supporter of Osama Bin Laden.

Before the attack, Alshamrani had posted on the social media ‘I am against the evil and the United States is a country of evil. You are Americans; I don’t hate you because you have freedom. But I am opposed to the crimes perpetrated by you, against Islam and humanity.’

Osama Bin Laden had issued a threat to the United States, in these words, following the 9/11 terror attacks. ‘Site’ claimed that Alshamrani, a trainee from Saudi, used the same words. More investigations are being conducted regarding Alshamrani and six of his colleagues, participating in the training, have been arrested. Three of these had recorded videos of the shootout.

An alert was issued on the Pensacola naval base, following the shootout. Saudi King Salman held talks with US President Trump regarding the shootout. Saudi King Salman expressed anger over the attack carried out by a Saudi trainee soldier. At the same time, the Saudi King gave his condolences for the soldiers killed in the attack.

King Salman made vitriolic criticism regarding the incident saying, ‘The United States is an ally of Saudi Arabia and anyone involved in such an act cannot be a Saudi citizen.’ Furthermore, King Salman clarified that Saudi agencies would cooperate fully with the United States, in the investigation of the unfortunate incident. 18 naval and two air force trainees had been sent to the Pensacola airbase, under the defence agreement between the United States and Saudi Arabia.

There were 200 trainees from other US allies, at the base, along with Saudi. An official connected to the incident, on condition of anonymity, informed that these trainees coming for training from Saudi Arabia are from families connected to the Saudi Royal Family. This increases the significance of the incident further. Within a few hours of this attack on Friday, there were reports of a bomb having been planted at the Patrick airbase in the state of Florida. But the US defence forces dismissed this as a rumour.

Meanwhile, the incidence of attacks on the US military bases is increasing. Two days ago, two people were killed in the shootout by a naval soldier. The incident on the Florida base, after that, has brought the issue of security at the US military bases, on the anvil.
