PM Modi on a visit to European countriesPrime Minister Modi will start his tour from Germany. Prime Minister Modi will hold bilateral talks with German Chancellor Scholz. After that, Prime Minister Modi will visit Denmark and France. The United States and some European countries are demanding that India adopt a stand against Russia in the conflict against Ukraine. However, under no circumstances will India give up its neutrality and take the side of any one country, foreign minister S. Jaishankar has repeatedly said. Prime Minister Modi also has presented the same stand frequently in clear words.

India says the only way to resolve the Ukraine crisis is by immediately ending the conflict and starting negotiations. India has also pointed out that the neutral stand adopted by India becomes the best policy to achieve this. Prime Minister Modi presented the same stand even before visiting European countries. On the peace and stability front, India will seek the cooperation of its European partner countries, the Prime Minister said.

Meanwhile, the US has started putting pressure on India by objecting to India’s cooperation with Russia. The US is not ready to ease the pressure on India despite India repeatedly clarifying its stand. The US is raising the issue of fuel that India is buying from Russia. At the same time, the Biden administration of the US has also brought to the fore the issue of arms purchases that India is making from Russia. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had claimed that India’s partnership with Russia was developed when the US was not available for India as a partner. But now that the US is ready to cooperate, the US Secretary of State has suggested that India cut its cooperation with Russia.

While the US is pressurising India, on the other hand, it has demanded that even the European countries should end the fuel cooperation with Russia. But European countries have rejected US demands, saying they have no choice but to import fuel from Russia. This suggests that India and European countries are simultaneously confronting the adamant policies of the United States. This has made India’s cooperation with European countries more strategically important. In particular, the cooperation of the major European countries of Germany and France with India will be an effective response to the pressure of the United States. That is why Prime Minister Modi’s visit to European countries is crucial both politically and strategically.
