NATO starts biggest war exercises in Arctic region

Oslo/Brussels: While Russia is increasing the intensity of attacks on Ukraine, NATO is holding comprehensive war exercises in Norway. Nearly 35,000 soldiers from 30 countries are participating in ‘Cold Response 2022’ exercises. At the same time as the exercises, a meeting of NATO is being held in Brussels. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg announced that 40,000 soldiers had been deployed on high alert in eastern Europe as a part of the Rapid Action Force.

While the extent of the attacks is increasing, the United States and NATO have supplied defence equipment on a large scale to Ukraine. NATO member countries, including the United States, consistently provide weapons to Ukraine. On the other hand, deployments in the east European countries bordering Russia have increased. The United States and NATO are exercising various options to pressurise Russia and the exercises in Norway also are a part of the same efforts.

Along with 35,000 soldiers, 200 airplanes and 50 warships and submarines participated in the exercises. NATO has clarified that Cold Response 2022 is an exercise held from a security point of view and not a military campaign with aggressive intentions. This exercise has attracted attention as it is held in a neighbouring Russian country. Meanwhile, a NATO meeting is also being held along with the exercises. During the meeting, NATO has made its deployments and plans more aggressive in Europe. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned ‘There are nearly 40,000 NATO soldiers in eastern Europe under NATO leadership. Whereas 100,000 US soldiers are deployed in European countries. This deployment is giving clear indications. If a NATO member country comes under attack, there will be a complete and decisive retaliation from NATO.’
