Iranian Revolutionary Guards launch missile attacks on Irbil in Iraq; allege targeting secret Israeli base  

Baghdad: – 12 missile attacks were launched on the Irbil city in Iraq on Sunday morning. These missiles landed at the US high commission and the nearby area. Iranian Revolutionary Guards accepted the responsibility for the attacks. The Revolutionary Guards claimed to have targeted a secret Israeli military base. Two Revolutionary Guards were killed in the attack by Israel in Syria last week. It is claimed that the Revolutionary Guards launched this attack to avenge the killings.

Missile attacks were launched on Irbil, the capital of the Kurdistan province, on Sunday morning. Besides, 12 missiles were fired in the direction of the new building of the US high commission. One civilian was seriously injured in the attack, and the high commission building compound was damaged. Photographs of the massive damages to the Kurdistan news channel building also have been published.   

The initial talk was that the attacks targeted the US high commission and military bases. Iraqi agencies said that Iranian made Fateh-10 missiles that were used in the attack. Therefore, the possible involvement of Iran affiliated terrorist organisations was being discussed.   

No organisation accepted the responsibility for the attack till Sunday afternoon. But a reporter from an Iranian news channel said that these attacks were to target a secret Israeli military base. The accusation of Iranian involvement has intensified with this report. The revolutionary Guards accepted the responsibility for the attacks on their website in the afternoon. The Revolutionary Guards announced that secret Israeli military bases were targeted with these attacks. The Revolutionary Guards warned Israel that a strong retaliation would be if it targeted Iranian interests.   

The leading Iranian military group did not reveal the reason behind the attack. But it is claimed that these attacks are in retaliation to the Israeli attacks in Syria last week. Two commanders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were killed in Israeli airstrikes in the Syrian capital Damascus. After that, the Revolutionary Guards had threatened retaliation.   

Meanwhile, the negotiations for the nuclear deal between the western countries and Iran have reached the final phases. At such a time, missile attacks by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards become significant.
