Quad – Engine of global development

QuadUS President Joe Biden has announced that he will not attend the Quad meeting in Australia. Claiming that the Quad meeting had collapsed due to this, China’s state-run newspapers mocked the organisation. But in reality, China had focused all its attention on the Quad Countries meeting held in Hiroshima. In this meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly presented the importance of this vast maritime area from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and its threat in precise diplomatic terms.

The Indo-Pacific region is the engine of global trade, innovation and development. Hence, Prime Minister Modi made it realised that this sector’s success has become very important for the whole world. With the global economy at risk of recession, China’s activities in the Indo-Pacific region have created instability. Without mentioning China directly, Prime Minister Modi warned that if China thus continues its unbridled activities, it will affect not only the countries in the region but also the entire world. The Prime Minister hoped that the Indo-Pacific region should follow international norms.

China is not ready to follow any rules in the Indo-Pacific region. On the contrary, China claims sovereignty rights over the South China Sea and the East China Sea, which are part of this region. Not only this, China says that the Indian Ocean is not India’s neighbour. China also tries to establish its supremacy in this area through expansionist activities. In such a situation, India, the US, Japan and Australia, major countries in this field, are expected to take a firm stand and stop China.

Citing this roughly, Prime Minister Modi reminded that the QUAD was established to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. At present, many countries and their groups around the world have put forth their policies and visions for the Indo-Pacific region. The Prime Minister indicatively said that this Quad meeting would be a guide for all of them. Considering the possible threat from China, Prime Minister Modi seems to have conveyed on this occasion that all responsible countries should unite for the Indo-Pacific region. Also, he further said that they were looking forward to holding the Quad meeting in India in 2024.
