Wildfires reported in southern Europe, Turkey and Lebanon

Rome/Istanbul – Following the United States, Canada and Russia, Europe is also facing major wildfires. Europe, Italy, Spain and Greece have been hit by the blaze, while the United Kingdom, France and Sweden are expected to be hit in the next few days. Turkey, which is adjoining Europe, also has been hit by wildfires claiming three lives. Lebanon and Syria have also been hit in the Gulf, with at least one person killed in Lebanon.

The floods in Spain have been brought under control, to some extent, but have not stopped completely, local officials said. Emergency was declared in the Italian island of Sardinia because of the wildfires.

In the province of Oristano in Sardinia, more than 20,000 hectares have been affected by the wildfires. According to local leader Christian Solinas, more than 1,500 people have been evacuated, and many homes and businesses have been reduced to ashes. Locals say the wildfires in Sardinia province are an unprecedented disaster. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said about 50 fires had erupted in Greece in 24 hours, along with Italy.

A 15-year-old boy was killed in the blaze, local officials said. The fire in Aakkar province has spread to the Syrian province of Homs, with Syrian army helicopters reportedly trying to take control of the blaze. Lebanon is said to have sought help from Cyprus for extinguishing the fires.
