Viruses deadlier than Corona to cause more horrifying pandemics, warns WHO Chief

Geneva: – Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), issued a serious warning, ‘Don’t be under the impression that the Coronavirus pandemic is the last pandemic in the world. As per the theory of evolution, the world can be faced with a virus of a more lethal and faster spreading variety. This virus will start a new pandemic in the world.’ Ghebreyesus, who issued this warning while inaugurating the 74th World Health Assembly, warned that the world is at a decisive turning point. The future crisis cannot be countered using traditional methods.

The Coronavirus Pandemic, which originated in China in 2019, has played havoc globally and is spreading rapidly. More than 160 million Coronavirus cases have been reported worldwide, and the pandemic has claimed 3.4 million lives. Many leading countries are reeling under the second and third wave of the pandemic. Newer strains are being reported worldwide and have created an atmosphere of concern on the international level. Against this background, the warning issued by the Chief of WHO becomes significant.

This is the second instance of a warning being issued of a new pandemic at a time when the Coronavirus pandemic is already ravaging the world. Even last year, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus had warned that the world should be prepared for a new pandemic during a meeting held in September. At the same time, he had warned that the world should make better preparations for the new pandemic. While reiterating the warning during the World Health Assembly meeting, he warned that there are only two options in front of the world. Dr Ghebreyesus said that cooperation or insecurity are the only options.

Meanwhile, the United States demanded a fresh transparent inquiry into the origin of Coronavirus during the World Health Assembly meeting. US Secretary of Health, Xavier Becerra, clarified the US stand in this regard. Becerra said, ‘Phase-2 inquiry should be started regarding the origin of Coronavirus. This inquiry should be more transparent, based on scientific facts and giving a completely free hand to the international experts.’

No factual inference could be drawn in the inquiry instituted by the WHO before this, and the leading countries of the world heavily criticised the investigation. Therefore, Dr Ghebreyesus, feeling the pressure, had indicated that new research could be initiated if all the member countries concur on demand.
