As per the information given by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, the conflict between the US and Iranian navies was avoided by a whisker. US submarine USS Georgia and six destroyers were on a mission for the security of the Persian Gulf and patrolling. The fleet included USS Monterey, a destroyer equipped with missiles. Kirby informed that 13 Iranian fast-attack boats sailed dangerously close to the US submarine and fleet of destroyers as soon as they entered the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian patrol boats continued to sail towards the US warships, despite repeated warnings. Kirby said that the US destroyer USCGC Maui had to fire 30 warning shots after these patrol boats reached a distance of 140 metres. Kirby told the media that the action had to be taken as the Iranian patrol ships were becoming over-aggressive. The US navy also published photographs of these patrol boats.

Iranian Revolutionary Guards have dismissed the allegations made by the United States. Revolutionary Guards said that the Iranian patrol boats chased 7 US warships. But the US naval ships were appealed to sail at a safe distance. The revolutionary Guards accused that the US naval ships did not pay any heed to the appeal. The Revolutionary Guards accused the US navy of resorting to suggestive activities like hovering helicopters, firing warning shots, and inciting firing.

Meanwhile, discussions are being held in Vienna between the United States and Iran regarding the nuclear deal. But the skirmishes between the two countries have increased in the Persian Gulf since the last few days. Ten days ago, four Iranian patrol boats sailed at a distance of only 62 metres from a US patrol ship. Before that, the Revolutionary Guards had published a video of a drone flying over the US aircraft carrier. This has tremendously increased the tension in the Persian Gulf.
