US takes cognisance of the Chinese threat to Bangladesh

Washington/Beijing: – The United States has taken cognisance of the threat issued by China to Bangladesh over participation in QUAD. Ned Price, the spokesman of the US State Department, said that the United States respects the sovereignty of Bangladesh and its rights to implement its foreign policy. Whereas the Chinese foreign ministry said that the warning issued to Bangladesh is appropriate. QUAD is an organisation against China. Hua Chunying, the spokeswoman of the Chinese foreign ministry, said that a warning issued regarding participation in QUAD does not become interference in the foreign policy of the other country.

Chunying said that India is more aware of the real motives behind QUAD than China. India will be able to give more information regarding this. But, this QAUD cooperation established keeping China aside, is targeting China using its neighbouring countries. Therefore, a warning issued against participation in QUAD does not amount to interference in the other country’s foreign policy. While issuing the warning to Bangladesh, the spokeswoman of the Chinese foreign ministry seems to have avoided using similar language against India, a main member of QUAD.

Bangladesh foreign minister had protested the threat issued by the Chinese Ambassador. Chunying refused to react to that, saying that she was not aware of the development. Chunying added that Bangladesh is an excellent ally of China and China believes in peaceful co-existence. But the repercussions of the Chinese threat to Bangladesh are being heard even in the United States. Ned Price, the spokesman of the US State Department, pointed out that the United States has taken cognisance of the threat.

QUAD is an informal but essential multiparty system. Price clarified that in this, the United States, India, Japan and Australia are making efforts for a free and open Indo-Pacific sector. US State Department spokesman indicates that any sovereign country has the right to decide whether to join QUAD and no other country can interfere with that decision. In precise words, the reaction recorded by the US State Department spokesman becomes displeasure expressed by the United States against the threat. Through this, a message has been sent to Bangladesh that the United States is standing behind it. This also clarifies that the United States is closely monitoring Chinese activities.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister had criticised ‘No Chinese diplomat has ever used such aggressive language against Bangladesh. The threat issued by the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh is an unfortunate development.’ The scholars in foreign affairs also have said that China has committed a blunder by issuing this threat to Bangladesh. A country like the United States is preparing to extract benefits from this situation, and China has increased its problems.
