The Russian government announced that both the countries agreed in principle to extend the New START treaty period by five years. Both the Presidents expressed satisfaction over the development. The Russian government informed that the United States agreed to sign the treaty on their terms. Simultaneously, on Wednesday, the proposal for the agreement was passed unhindered in the Russian parliament.

The Biden administration did not elaborate further in the matter. But the white house spokeswoman Jen Psaki informed that both the Presidents have issued orders, to the officials, for immediate implementation of the agreement. It is claimed that President Biden does not need clearances from the US Senate and Congress, for extension of the New START Treaty. The existing New START Treaty was due to expire on the coming 5th February. Against this background, there is urgency shown by both the countries for extension of the agreement.

In April 2010, the then US President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had signed the New START Treaty. As per the New START Treaty, both the countries are not allowed to deploy more than 1,550 nuclear weapons and 700 intercontinental ballistic missiles. At the same time, there is a provision for inspection of each other’s nuclear bases. The European Union claimed that extending the treaty has also eliminated threats to European security.

Former US President had opposed this agreement with Russia. Trump had criticised that the agreement is tying down the United States and setting Russia free. President Trump had withdrawn from the agreement accusing that Russia and China have increased their nuclear and missile capabilities under the disguise of this agreement. Trump had put a condition that China also must be a party to the agreement. Russia too had suggested to China to consider the US demand. But China refused to accept the US demand in clear words. He also said that the United States and Russia have nuclear weapons, multiplying what China possesses. After that, President Trump announced that he would not agree with Russia and the United States to increase its nuclear and missile capabilities.
