Washington – The United States has responded to drone and rocket attacks on US troops, military bases and embassies in Iraq over the past three months. The Pentagon has announced that it has carried out airstrikes on terrorist havens in Iraq and Syria, targeting US interests. The Iran-linked militant group has since threatened to retaliate against the United States. The Iraqi government has criticised the attacks as a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty.

On Sunday evening, two attacks were carried out in Syria, and one was carried out in Iraq. The US F-15 and F-16 fighter jets carried out the operation. These attacks targeted the Iran-backed militant bases and ammunition warehouses. The three locations targetted by the Iranian-linked terrorist groups Kata’ib Hezbollah and Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada for drone strikes were on US troops, military bases and embassies in Iraq. That’s why the United States had launched attacks here, Kirby said.

According to international and US regulations, Kirby told the media the action was completely legal and necessary. Kirby did not give details of how many people were killed in the attack. But it is claimed that the airstrikes have caused major damage to Iran-linked terrorist organisations. This is clear from the video released by the Pentagon. There have been 43 drone and rocket attacks on US interests in Iraq in the past six months. The Pentagon has blamed that five drone strikes have been carried on US bases in Iraq since April. The Biden administration is said to have warned Iran by launching attacks on terrorist organisations in Iraq and Syria.

There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq, as well as private contractors for military bases. Iran-affiliated leaders and armed groups in Iraq have demanded the United States to withdraw its forces from Iraq. But if the United States withdraws from Iraq after Afghanistan, it could create a huge vacuum in the region and could be exploited by Iran-linked terrorist groups, the US CENTCOM chief warned a few weeks ago.
