In an interview with a Russian news agency, the commander of the Northern Alliance, Fahim Dashty, underlined the threat posed by the Taliban. Ahmad Shah Massoud, the leader of the Northern Alliance, is known as a trusted ally. The commander, who warned Russia not to trust the Taliban, warned of a possible threat from the Taliban to Central Asian countries. Under the Taliban regime, Afghanistan became a centre of terrorism. This is where the export of terrorists to the whole world will start. This would make the Taliban a threat to the entire world. However, Dashty warned that terrorism would spread rapidly in Central Asian countries bordering Afghanistan.

Along with Central Asian nations, Russia will have to deal with the wave of terrorism, Dashty added. Currently, Russia appears to be softening its stance on the Taliban. Russia, along with China, has been among the countries eager to recognize the Taliban. In such a situation, Dashty has warned Russia and Central Asian countries about the threat posed by the Taliban. Tajikistan has already stated that it will not recognize the Taliban’s terrorist regime. While other Central Asian countries have not played such a clear role, they appear doubtful regarding the Taliban.

Against this backdrop, the Northern Alliance advises Russia to reconsider its role, claiming that the Taliban could establish stability in Afghanistan. If international opposition to the Taliban’s terrorist policies increases in the future, the importance of the Northern Alliance may increase. Also, if the Afghan people stand behind the Northern Alliance, it will not be possible for the Taliban to rule Afghanistan. This makes it unaffordable for Russia and Central Asian countries to ignore the Northern Alliance in the present times.
