On Wednesday, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister met Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in Dushanbe. Qureshi called on the President of Tajikistan to persuade him to recognize the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The Pakistani Foreign Minister expressed confidence that only the Taliban would be able to handle Afghanistan properly.

Qureshi also called on Tajikistan to stop supplying weapons to the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan’s Panjshir. Pakistan claims that the Northern Alliance is challenging the Taliban because of the weapons it receives from Tajikistan. But both demands made by Foreign Minister Qureshi about the Taliban were publicly rejected by Tajik President Rahmon in front of the media.

Rahmon told Pakistan’s Foreign Minister that Tajikistan would not recognize any group that has seized power by oppressing the Afghan people. Tajikistan will only support those who protect the security and interests of the Afghan people and the minorities there. In the past few days, the President of Tajikistan has drawn attention to the atrocities committed by Taliban terrorists against the Tajik, Hazara and Uzbek minorities in Afghanistan and Pashtun civilians. At the same time, President Rahmon said further consideration would be given only if Afghanistan’s next government is inclusive. The statement by the Tajik president to the media that he would not recognize the Taliban in Qureshi’s face has caused a stir in Pakistan. The Pakistani media is criticizing that the Pakistani foreign policy has failed once again.
