China seething due to Taiwan’s presence in the Copenhagen Democracy Summit

Copenhagen/Beijing: – Presence of Taiwan in the Democracy Summit, held in the European city of Copenhagen, has badly stung China. Chinese foreign ministry has spewed fire that the concerned summit is only a political farce. Whereas, media and analysts in China have condemned the European summit saying that this was a stage for the front of losers. The Chinese regime is making aggressive efforts to end the independent status of Taiwan on the international level. But the campaign is not gaining any success, and instead, the support for Taiwanese independence is seen to be increasing on the international level for the last year.

An annual Democracy Summit is being held since 2018 by the organisation Alliance of Democracies, established by former Danish Prime Minister Fogh Rasmussen. Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen was one of the main speakers at the summit organised this year. Tsai Ing-wen, who participated via videoconferencing, presented the Taiwanese stand on ‘Securing Democracy-Taiwanese Experience’.

The Taiwanese President warned that the democratic countries of the world need to unite, firing a salvo at the monopolistic regimes and expansionist policies, without mentioning China. She appealed to strengthen the front on the issues of independence, abiding by the laws and human rights. Tsai Ing-wen said, ‘Some countries with monopolistic regimes are trying to alter the rules-based global systems, taking advantage of the Coronavirus pandemic. It is necessary to secure the international trade framework, and the democratic countries should come together to maintain the supply chain in order.’

The Taiwanese President being given an honourable place on an international platform comes as a major jolt for China. China is making aggressive efforts to prevent Taiwan from attaining an independent status on the international level. Some small countries have been pressured to sever their ties with Taiwan. It has also been exposed that China has used its economic and diplomatic might to prevent Taiwan’s entry into the World Health Organisation. Against this background, China has severely criticised the Taiwanese presence in the summit organised in Europe.

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying fired a salvo of criticism, ‘The function in Copenhagen was organised by an organisation known to be spreading rumours and fake information regarding China. The program was just a political farce. Democracy should not become a tool to suppress other countries. European leaders should understand the real meaning of democracy and work for the people’s welfare.’ The Chinese embassy in Denmark also criticised the summit and accused that the western leaders are hypocrites.
