Two days ago, the Afghan army killed many Taliban militants in an operation in Paktika and Helmand provinces on the Pakistan border. According to an Afghan news agency, two senior Taliban commanders were killed. These included the brother of a Taliban leader who attended the talks in Doha and the son of a commander. Anas Haqqani and Abdul Haq Omari are the names of the slain commanders.

Jalaluddin Haqqani, a close confidant of Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar, is no longer alive. Sirajuddin Haqqani took over the reins of the Haqqani network after him. Anas Haqqani was captured by the US a few years ago. But a few months later, the Taliban released Anas Haqqani in exchange for abducted foreign nationals. Anas Haqqani is considered as one of the prominent leaders of the Taliban. Anas Haqqani participated in the talks between the United States and the Taliban in Doha, Qatar. This is a good indication of his position in the Taliban.

That is why the Afghan army has succeeded in delivering a major blow to the Taliban by killing Anas Haqqani. For the past few weeks, reports of the Taliban forging ahead in Afghanistan are consistently being received. It was being claimed that the Afghan army was surrendering to the Taliban without a fight. Although this was the situation in some places, the Afghan government claimed that the Afghan army is fighting and defeating the Taliban at most locations. Now it appears that the Afghan military has posed an open challenge to the Taliban by eliminating key Taliban leaders such as Anas Haqqani.
