Seoul: South Korea has alleged that two Russian military bomber aircraft trespassed and hovered over the South Korean airspace. It also announced that following this incursion by Russia, South Korea dispatched its fighter planes which drove away the intruding Russian bomber planes. Since this was a first ever intrusion by Russia, the South Korean military has also expressed surprise over the incident.
As per the information of a leading South Korean news agency, the incident of incursion by the Russian planes took place on Friday afternoon. Two of the “TU 95” bomber planes of the Russian military, entered the South Korean “Air Defense Identification Zone”. The Russian bomber planes which intruded from the Ulleungdo Islands border hovered as far as Pohang. The hovering of the Russian bombers continued for half an hour.
An hour after this hovering ended at 2.35 pm, the Russian bombers intruded again from the Jeju Islands border. This time, the hovering continued for 25 minutes. The Russian bombers repeated its hovering for the third time over the Jeju Islands. While in the fourth incident the Russian bombers travelled over the Dokdo Islands. All four incidents of intrusion by the Russian bomber planes continued for half an hour each.
South Korea dispatched its fighter planes to drive away the intruding Russian bomber aircrafts. The South Korean military informed that the Russian bomber aircrafts beat a retreat after the action by the South Korean fighter planes. The South Korean military has stated that this was the first time that Russia had intruded upon its air space. It also added that the reason behind this Russian intrusion was not clear.
So far, there had been reports about the Russian fighter and bomber planes having intruded the air spaces of the United States and Norway. Earlier in May, the Russian bombers had intruded the air space of the Alaska region of the United States. It was said that this was a result of the tension between Russia and the United States. However, serious consideration is being given to the intrusion upon the South Korean airspace by the Russian bomber planes.
