Referendum in Switzerland accomplishes Burqa Ban

Bern: On Sunday, the decision to ban the burqa in Switzerland was agreed upon in a referendum. The leading Swiss People’s Party had proposed this bill. Moreover, the party’s leader, Walter Wobmann, supported the ban. He said, ‘Facial covering is a symbol for this extreme, political Islam that has become increasingly prominent in Europe and has no place in Switzerland.’

The sources have also informed that Switzerland has a direct democracy system, and thus, the changes in policy regarding the Burqa Ban will be done according to the referendum result. However, Islamists disapproved of this ban and held protests in a few parts of the country. The Central Council of Muslims has called the day of the referendum a black day. The council has also warned of challenging this decision. The population of Switzerland is 86 lakhs, and 5% of it are Muslims. These include Muslim migrants from Turkey, Bosnia and Kosovo.

The Burqa Ban is a controversial subject in the European nations. Moreover, the right-wing groups have voiced themselves on this issue frequently. This issue has come to the fore once more, against the background of refugee invasion. The European liberals are against this decision. But the European citizens favour this decision, and the referendum in Switzerland proves it.
