Protests held against China in the Philippines

Manila: – The discontent against China in the Filipino population over the constant intrusions into the Filipino air and marine limits has started erupting. Two days ago, on the occasion of the 123rd Independence Day, hundreds of Filipino citizens took to the streets to protest against China. The organisers of the protests said that these protests are a warning to the colonialists and foreign attackers. At the same time, the protestors also criticised President Rodrigo Duterte for his soft stand against China.

It has been 123 years since the Philippines have gained freedom from the Spanish colonialists. Grand functions were organised to commemorate the occasion in various cities of the Philippines. Instead of going to these functions, the Filipino population took to the streets to protest against China. There was major sloganeering in front of the Chinese consulate in Manila. Placards saying, ‘Expel Chinese ships from Philippines waters’ and ‘West Philippines marine region belongs to the Philippines’ were displayed during the protests.   

Whereas students, fishermen, farmers, researchers and other citizens protested against President Rodrigo Duterte in front of the Chinese High Commission in Makati. The protesters gave slogans that the Philippines need strong leadership to retaliate against the Chinese intrusions and the country’s security and sovereignty. Leaders and citizens alike are criticising that the policies of President Duterte have been inclined towards China for the last few years.
