New Zealand backs Australia in trade dispute with China

Wellington: – New Zealand Trade Minister Damien O’Connor said that New Zealand is the third party in the trade conflict sparked between Australia and China and assured that New Zealand is standing with Australia. He also noted that a rule-based trading system needs to be maintained globally, without a direct mention of China. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison is on a visit to New Zealand on Sunday. It is said that the Australia-New Zealand cooperation is highest on the agenda, for a visit, because of the tensions reigning between Australia and China. Against this background, the statement made by the New Zealand Minister is considered important.

China has imposed taxes on barley, coal, timber and many other products imported from Australia. A few days ago, China announced an indefinite postponement of discussions regarding the economic agreement to be signed with Australia. After that, it has also been reported that China has started looking for alternative sources for natural gas and raw steel imported from Australia on a large scale.
