Prime Minister Oli dissolves Nepal parliament; opposition slams decision

Kathmandu: Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, announced the decision to dissolve the national parliament. Nepalese President Bidyadevi Bhandari has accepted the proposal submitted by Prime Minister Oli and announced that elections would be held in April and May next year. Opposition parties, as well as the members of the ruling party, criticised the decision of Prime Minister Oli. They warned that the dissolution of the parliament is unconstitutional and anti-democracy. Since the last few months, Prime Minister Oli had hurt India, adopting a pro-China stand. His decision becomes significant against this background.

nepal-pm-oli-20-decPrime Minister KP Sharma Oli held an urgent meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers. Prime Minister Oli presented the proposal for the dissolution of the parliament during this meeting. After the sanction of the cabinet, the proposal was presented to President Bhandari. President accepted the proposal and issued orders to dissolve the parliament. At the same time, elections also were announced, the polling will be held on the dates 30th April and 10th May.   

Currently, there is a coalition government of Communist Party of Nepal (UFL) of KP Sharma Oli and Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) of Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda. The two parties are at loggerheads and the Prachanda group has been strongly criticising the policies of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. An aggressive reaction has been received from this group regarding the parliament dissolution and the group has criticised that the decision is unconstitutional and unilateral.   

Allegations of corruption are being levelled against Prime Minister Oli’s government. There are internal disputes in the Oli government. Besides, massive protests have started since the last two weeks accusing that the Prime Minister failed in controlling the Coronavirus menace. Demands like dismissing the Sharma Oli government and establish monarchy again in Nepal were made during the demonstrations. It is claimed that the protests received a massive response.  

It is also being claimed that these developments in Nepal have the background of the India-China dispute. Nepalese Prime Minister Oli had taken a list of pro-China decisions over the last few months. While doing this, there was gross neglect towards the Chinese intrusion and other activities. India had reacted sharply against this. Prime Minister Oli started changing his policies after top Indian officials visited Nepal to deliver the right kind of messages.
