Need for more emphasis on disruptive technologies in future wars: Indian Army chief Gen Naravane

New Delhi: Indian Chief of Army Staff General MM Naravane has stated that the rapid advances in the latest and hi-tech technologies are causing a sea of changes in the war techniques, and the Indian military needs to focus heavily on disruptive technologies. The Indian and Chinese military are facing each other in Ladakh and Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, has issued a warning to China that the use of military force is an option if the political discussions regarding the border dispute fail. Against this background, the stand taken by the Army Chief over disruptive technologies becomes significant.

A conference on the subject of ‘Impact of disruptive technologies on our fighting philosophy in future conflicts’ was organised in the Army War College at Mhow in Madhya Pradesh. General Naravane spoke regarding fighting a war and the effects of disruptive technologies in a war situation. At this time, he stressed that there is a need to focus on disruptive technologies. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Cyber Warfare, 5G Cloud Computing, Quantum Computing and Space Technologies are a part of disruptive technologies.  

Army Chief Naravane said that the current campaign to upgrade the defence forces is centred around upgrading the current weapon systems and platforms. But subsequently, sufficient focus will have to be on the advanced technologies available, having a duel use for the Indian military. He drew attention to the fact that the army is already studying different technologies like drones, lasers, robots and artificial intelligence. The Army Chief noted that the Indian defence forces need to stress on the use of available technologies; technologies that could be developed in collaboration with someone and those that could be bought.   

The statement issued by the military clarifies that today, there have been many changes in the war techniques. The current period is a tsunami of technology. Therefore, the military will have to adapt to future wars.
