Israelis & Arabs are speaking in one voice, UNSC must listen for Mideast security: US Secretary of State

Dubai: US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has demanded that Israel and the Arab countries concur on the view that the sanctions against Iran should continue and the UN Security Council should listen to them. Only a few hours ago, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) had appealed to the UN Security Council regarding sanctions against Iran. Thereafter, the United States has made this demand. Meanwhile, Iran has criticised that the claim made by the Arab countries, regarding sanctions, is unrealistic.

America-GulfThe well-known association of six countries from the Gulf, GCC, made an appeal to the UN Security Council regarding sanctions against Iran on Sunday. GCC Secretary-General, Nayef Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf, appealed that till the time Iran does not stop creating instability in other countries and arming the terrorist organisations, the sanctions banning arms purchase and sale imposed against Iran should not be withdrawn.

Since 2017, differences had surfaced between Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman, the members of GCC. Out of these, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain had boycotted Qatar over cooperation with Iran. Thereafter, no joint declarations have been published regarding Iran by the GCC. But, for the first time in the last three years, the GCC members have concurred on the Iran issue, and US Secretary of State has reacted to it.

Pompeo demanded that the Arab countries, as well as Israel, concur that sanctions against Iran should continue. The sanctions against Iran are important from the point of view of security of these countries, and therefore, the UN Security Council should listen to them. The UN Security Council should choose between a country that is arming terrorists and the security of the Gulf countries. At the same time, Pompeo informed that the United States would be bringing a fresh proposal for extending the period of sanctions against Iran.

As per the agreement signed in 2015, sanctions imposed by the United Nations against Iran are ending on the 18th of October. The United States is demanding that the United Nations should increase the period of these sanctions. Israel has already declared support to the US demand. Whereas, now it has been revealed that the GCC countries also have concurred on this issue. Despite this, it is claimed that Russia and China will be using their veto right to stall the proposal for extension of sanctions against Iran.
