Damascus: The Syrian mouthpiece accused that the Israeli fighter jets carried out missile attacks on locations close to capital Damascus. The mouthpiece also said that the Syrian military activated the air defence system to bust the attack. But it is being revealed that an Iranian weapon depot in Syria was destroyed in the attack. Even two weeks ago, it had been accused that Israel had carried out attacks on Iranian warehouses near Damascus.
SANA, the official news agency of the Syrian government, gave information regarding this. Israeli fighter jets carried out attacks near the capital of Damascus on Tuesday night. But the Syrian military activated the air defence system in the nick of time and neutralised most of the Israeli missiles. Therefore, there were no casualties reported. The Syrian news agency said that certain losses to property had been reported.
But the Syrian media and the human rights organisations presented a different version. Passenger and freight carrier aircraft had reached Syria with a haul of weapons on Tuesday morning from Iran. As per the website monitoring, the movement of passenger a freight carrier aircraft worldwide, Mahan Air and Syrian air force planes travelled from Iran to Syria. The Israeli media is claiming that Iran smuggled weapons for Syria and Lebanon on board these planes. The weapons were all stocked in a warehouse near the capital Damascus. The concerned warehouse was under Iranian control. Israel attacked two of these warehouses. Syrian media and human rights organisations claimed that the Iranian weapon stock was destroyed in these airstrikes. Locals said that the sounds of explosions at these warehouses were heard even by people in nearby towns.
The Israeli military avoided reacting to these claims made by Syrian media and the human rights organisations. There had been an attack on an Iranian warehouse near Damascus, even on the 28th of February. Even then, it was being said that Iranian weapons stocks were destroyed. The Syrian military had held Israel responsible even for this attack.
Syria had accused Israel of being responsible for the airstrikes in other parts of Syria a month ago. This is the eighth attack in Syria in the current year.
Israel initiated its streak of attacks after Iran and Hezbollah set foot in Syria to support the Assad regime in 2011. Israel also accepted acting against the Iranian soldiers, Hezbollah and other Iran affiliated terrorist organisations, setting up bases in Syria and posing a threat to Israeli security. Israeli leaders even warned that the actions would continue in the future.
Taking advantage of the civil war in Syria, Iran developed its military bases in Syria. Iran has made all the preparations to use them against Israel. Israel is justifying the attacks in Syria, saying that this will never be tolerated.
Syria is criticising the Israeli attacks in the country. Russia, which has deployed its military in Syria, also has expressed strong resentment over the Israeli attacks. But Syria and Russia have failed to fulfil the Israeli demand to stop Iranian military interference from stopping the attacks. Despite repeated instructions issued by Russia, Iran is just ignoring Russia. Therefore, differences between Russia and Iran have surfaced over this issue.
