India to sign civil nuclear cooperation pact with Vietnam

New Delhi : A civil nuclear cooperation pact may probably be signed this week between India and Vietnam. The President of Vietnam’s National Assembly, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan is on India visit. This pact may be signed during this visit. The Indian Prime Minister was on Vietnam visit in September. During this visit, the decision to sign the civil nuclear cooperation pact with Vietnam was made. Negotiation pertaining to the pact was completed during the last two months. India has signed such a pact prior to this only with Sri Lanka.

Currently, the atmosphere is tense between China and Vietnam over the ‘South China Sea’. India is to provide the Brahmos missile to Vietnam. Thus, China had expressed its displeasure over the increased defence cooperation between India and Vietnam. The civil nuclear cooperation pact between the two nations against this backdrop, will further add to China’s concerns.
