At the same time, countries with interests connected with Afghanistan, are making efforts on different levels. One of the statements issued by the Russian foreign ministry, in the last week, stated that talks similar to the one’s being held in Doha could take place between Afghanistan-Taliban and Russia. This meeting in Russia is considered a precursor for these efforts.

While talks were being held in Doha, the Afghan Chief Executive Officer, Abdullah Abdullah, had visited India and Iran. Other senior Afghan leaders and officials also visited India, recently. Iran is an immediate neighbour of Afghanistan and Iran has connections with the people from the Hazara community in Afghanistan. It is said that Iran has been successful in establishing a connect with the Taliban. Therefore, the position of both Iran and India becomes vital in the Afghanistan peace process.

Given this background, the meeting called with a Russian initiative with India and Iran attracts attention.
