India exports defence equipment to 84 countries

New Delhi: – Minister of State for Defence, Shripad Naik, informed, while answering a question in the Lok Sabha, that India has made huge exports of defence equipment over the last five years. Naik clarified that the names of the countries could not be disclosed for policy reasons.

Defence equipment exports have started on a large scale from the country over the last five years. The Minister of State said that weapon simulators, tear gas launcher, torpedo loading mechanism, alarm monitoring and control, night vision monocular and binocular, lightweight torpedo, and fire control systems featured in the exported equipment list.   

Over the last six years, the union government has taken multiple important decisions to increase and facilitate the export of defence equipment. Naik pointed out that many policy amendments have been carried out. Changes were made even to the Standard Operating Procedures to increase the export of defence equipment. The lists of weapons and equipment that were allowed to be exported also were amended. The government also issued a notification regarding the Open General Export Licence. Naik said that the notification permits the companies from this industry to export certain equipment. In February, Defence Minister Raj Nath Singh had informed about the goal set for export of defence equipment worth $5 billion over the next five years. The Defence Minister also had expressed confidence that India will attain its goal. In 2018-19, India reported an export of defence equipment worth ₹107.45 billion, seven times compared to the export in 2016-17.
