India building cooperation with Russia and Japan for the Indo-Pacific

New Delhi: – Some analysts are expressing concerns that new US President, Joe Biden, may adopt a liberal stand regarding China. This could affect Indian security. If the Biden administration adopts a negative stand regarding the QUAD cooperation between India, the United States, Australia and Japan, to stop China in the Indo-Pacific region, it could have adverse effects on the sector’s security. Considering all this, India has started moves to get cooperation from Japan and Russia concerning the Indo-Pacific sector. Accordingly, India is developing tripartite cooperation along with Japan and Russia. At the same time, India is taking steps to cooperate with Russia and Japan to stop China.

india-japan-russiaReports were received that only last week, India held discussions with Japan and Russia regarding the matter. All the details of the talks have not been revealed. But these moves initiated by India, not being sure regarding the stand of the Biden administration, become significant. In the times to come, the Biden administration could adopt an aggressive stand against China. But this aggression could only be vocal. The analysts have started claiming that in reality, the Biden administration will adopt policies favouring China. The analysts are pointing to the fact that Biden had opposed President Trump’s anti-China policies during the election campaign.

Against this background, the QUAD cooperation could be hampered. The regional countries have realised that it will be difficult to stop the Chinese activities in the Indo-Pacific region in this scenario. Therefore, along with the bilateral cooperation, India and Japan are forming independent tripartite groups with France and Russia. The countries have clarified that this cooperation developing between India, Japan and Russia is not targeting any country. The countries have revealed that this cooperation will be in maritime security, higher technology, research, energy, coal agriculture and pharmaceutical sectors. These countries will be cooperating even on the natural resources in far eastern Russia.

The India-Japan cooperation with Russia could prove to be a jolt to China. Till date, Russia had taken a stand to support China against the United States. But after the US stand regarding China changes, it is claimed that the next target for this country could be Russia. Although, as of now, President Biden has consented to extend the new START treaty with Russia, analysts are asking will he adopt an aggressive stand against Russia in the future.

Indications are that realising that the Chinese dependence on Russia will reduce after these developments, Russia has further strengthened its cooperation with India and Japan.
