Major blaze at a well of Oil India Limited in Assam  

Guwahati: – Two firefighters were killed in the fire at an oil well of Oil India Limited at Baghjan, Tinsukia, in the state of Assam. There was a major blowout at this oil well on Tuesday. The fire reached the nearby villages, and the residents of the villages had to be moved to safer places. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal talked with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, regarding the incident.

There was an explosion at the oil well on 27th May, and a gas leak started from the oil well. This caused damage to the environment. On Tuesday evening, the well suddenly caught fire. The flares of the fire were visible from one and a half kilometres. The employees of Oil India and ONGC were moved to a safe place, after the outbreak of the fire. The fire brigade started their operations to control the fire. But two of the firefighters disappeared. Assistance had to be sought from the NDRF to search the missing firefighters.   

One of them was found dead in a well near the site. Looking at the increasing intensity of the fire, the Assam government took the help of the Indian Army and Navy. The fire reached the neighbouring villages, and six people have reportedly been injured. The sources informed that it would take nearly four weeks to control the fire.   

After the incident, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal took a review of the situation and appealed to the people in the area not to panic. Chief Minister Sonowal has informed the Prime Minister and Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan about the incident. The Prime Minister has assured all the possible assistance to Chief Minister Sonowal.
