Discontent against China, brewing even in African countries

Harare/Addis Ababa: – China treated the African countries disdainfully, during the current Coronavirus pandemic; the reports are being received now. Repercussions of the feeling are becoming evident now and the demand for expulsion of the Chinese citizens, from Africa, is becoming stronger. China might have to bear the brunt of the anti-Chinese sentiment, growing in the African population. The United States too has criticised the racial discrimination meted out by China to the African people.

In the last week, African citizens and tourists were forced to undergo tests for Coronavirus, in the city of Guangzhou, in China. The African citizens were also placed under compulsory isolation for 14 days. In some other parts of China, African citizens were expelled from their residences. These African citizens have also been refused accommodation by the hotel and lodge owners. Therefore, these citizens have to live in the open. This ethnic discrimination seems to have erupted after five African citizens tested positive for Coronavirus.

Some African citizens have appealed through a video ‘Relieve us from this hell’. There is a wave of anti-China anger in Africa, following the reports of the atrocities meted out to their fellow Africans, by the Chinese government. Governments, media and people from South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, along with Nigeria, are attacking China. The Kenyan parliament has lashed out that China should walk out of the country and the Kenyan leaders are demanding the expulsion of all the Chinese people from the country.

Whereas, the Nigerian leader summoned the Chinese Ambassador and reprimanded ‘The treatment meted out to the Nigerian citizens in China will never be tolerated.’ The governments in Uganda and Ghana too reprimanded the Chinese Ambassadors in their countries. Ghana lambasted that this kind of a treatment given to our citizens cannot be tolerated. Whereas, the African Union has conveyed its displeasure to the Chinese special envoy.

The reaction from the African continent has rocked China. Zhao Lijiang, the spokesman of the Chinese foreign department, said that serious cognisance has been taken of the reaction received from the African countries. Lijiang said that all the information regarding the process of action and isolation will be provided. But the African countries are not satisfied with the reaction of the Chinese foreign ministry. The leaders and people of Africa are expressing displeasure that China has always meted out a secondary level treatment to the African people.

The repercussions of the atrocities against the African people in China may be seen in the political and trade cooperation between China and the African countries. In the last few years, China has made huge investments in the African countries and China has a major share in the oil production and mining in the African countries. Last year’s trade between China and the African countries was to the tune of $208 billion. Therefore, Africa can deliver severe jolts to China on the political and trade levels.
