China has ramped up security in major cities, including the capital Beijing, to quell the protests going on for four consecutive days. At the same time, considering the strong reactions on the international level regarding the protests, indications of relaxing the Covid restrictions. While the Chinese regime is starting these moves, there have been reports that the people of Hong Kong have supported the agitation against the ‘Zero Covid Policy’.

A few months ago, the outbreak of Covid in Shanghai, known as the financial centre of China, received strong reactions from the international level. It was hinted that China would relax the ‘Zero Covid Policy’, after this. But in reality, President Xi Jinping and his immediate leaders justified this policy aggressively. At the same time, the picture of the Covid outbreak and the increasing number of patients was becoming visible on the other side. Due to this, the displeasure was increasing among the people. After the incident in Xinjiang last week, there was huge anger among the Chinese public. People took to the streets in almost all the country’s major cities and strongly protested against the communist regime that imposed the Covid restrictions. This became an unexpected development for the rulers of China.

China has greatly increased the deployment of security forces in Beijing and Shanghai to prevent new protests. At the same time, a door-to-door search campaign has also been launched for the protesters. It has also come to light that the mobile phones of the people walking on the streets are being checked and the photographs of the protests are being forced to be deleted. It is also reported that there was an altercation between the security forces and citizens. Students at universities that have been the epicentre of these protests have been ordered to go home.  

Chinese government agencies and news agencies have indicated that the process to relax the ‘Zero Covid Policy’ has started. Besides, the officials claimed that barricades erected outside urban areas in the capital Beijing and Shanghai would be removed. In some cities, local administrations have also started preparations to give freedom to citizens for ‘social activities’. Chinese government dailies and news agencies have expressed the belief that the protests will stop if the sanctions are relaxed. Along with this, the Chinese authorities also informed that the speed of vaccination has increased among senior citizens.  

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the protests that started in China have received support from Hong Kong. It has been reported that the citizens of Hong Kong expressed their support to the agitation against Covid restrictions by hoisting ‘blank paper’ on Monday.
