On Monday, Trump signed a memo ordering an enquiry into China trade practices. Trump said, “while US provides a market place for companies, it firmly stands against any country violating intellectual property practices. We will confront any illegal replication and violation of intellectual property that affect the American jobs”

US will protect any copyright, patent, trademarks, confidential trade information and intellectual rights for US security and its prosperity. President Trump warns that hence forward any theft of US Industry’s information by China will not be overlooked. US Chief Representative of Commerce Robert Laithaiser will initiate an enquiry on China’s illegal trade practices as per the memo signed by President Trump. Decision to impose sanctions or any other action against China, will be decided after the enquiry is completed.

President Trump’s decision to initiate enquiry against China for illegal trade practices is considered very significant move. Few days back President Trump had appreciated China’s co-operation on the North Korea issue. After assuming office as the President, Trump has encouraged to grow trade with China. ‘100 day plan’ was also announced to increase US-China trade. Bilateral trade agreement was widely publicized then.

All the steps taken earlier, indicated a softer stand adopted by US with China, however by initiating an enquiry against China’s illegal trade practices, Trump has exhibited that his earlier policy against China has not changed. During his presidential election campaign, Trump had alleged China of duping US and had recommended stern against China. He had indicated of imposing sanctions against China if necessary. The orders issued on Monday, seems to be a remarkable step in this direction.

China has reacted strongly and said this decision is a grave concern. China responded that due to US protective trade policy, bilateral trade will be badly affected. China warned that if US continues to ignore trade rules, facts and bilateral trade relations, China would not sit idle.

Earlier Chinese spoke person of Foreign Ministry, Hua Chunging, warned that both sides would lose out if Trump begins a trade war. US-China trade relations are entrenched at various levels. He further stated that a trade war would not be beneficial to any country and neither would be able to win such a trade war.
