The attack was carried out when the Joint party was patrolling on the M4 highway, considered to be most important in the Idlib province. Two vehicles of the Russia and Turkish military suffered major damages in the bomb attack. 3 Russian soldiers escaped with minor injuries and but complete information regarding the Turkish soldiers has not been received. But the media claimed that many Turkish soldiers were injured in the attack. Russia and Turkey have clarified that the joint patrolling, on the concerned highway, will continue despite the attack.

M4 is the most important road, joining the Syrian capital of Damascus to Turkey, passing through Idlib. The Turkish border is just 30 kilometres away from the highway. In February, a fierce conflict had started between Turkey and Syria for control over this highway. Major casualties were reported from both the militaries and even the affiliate groups. The Syrian Assad government, supported by Russia, had launched fierce attacks on the Turkish military and affiliate groups. Whereas, Turkey had prepared for a major conflict, with the deployment of more and more troupes into Syria. Tension had been created between Russia and Turkey over this conflict. Thereafter, a ceasefire was negotiated with turkey with an initiative from Russia. But it was being said that this ceasefire will be short-lived.
