Washington – On Saturday, there were four incidents of mass shooting, in 24 hours, in the United States. Five people were killed, and 20 were injured in the incidents, and it is said that the number of casualties may increase as some of the wounded are in critical condition. Against the background of these incidents, police officers and analysts have expressed fears that there will be a significant increase in the number of mass shooting incidents.
On Saturday, mass shooting incidents were reported from Texas, Georgia, Ohio and Illinois in the United States. Three people were killed in the indiscriminate firing incident at Cleveland in the state of Ohio, and four others were injured.
One woman died, and nine others injured in the shooting incident in the Chicago city of Illinois state. Indiscriminate firing in the Savannah area in Georgia resulted in the death of one person and injuries to seven others. Fourteen were injured in Texas, and two of the injured are said to be in critical condition.
The police department has become extremely restless because of the successive shooting incidents, and the possibility of the incidences increasing soon is being predicted. Roy Minter, the Police Chief of Savannah, reacted, ‘We are disturbed because of the increasing incidents of indiscriminate firing and violence around the country. These incidents are numbing the senses.’ He also claimed that there is a possibility of an increase in such occurrences in the coming times. Chuck Wexler, the Executive Director of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), also endorsed the view. Former officials and analysts have claimed that the Coronavirus pandemic and campaigns like Defend Police are the reason behind this increase. Many police officers have resigned due to the Defend Police campaign and the accusations levelled against the police. The Coronavirus pandemic also has claimed the lives of many police officers. Therefore, there is a shortage of workforce in the police unit, and it is believed that the criminals are taking advantage of this.
Once again, the Gun Control issue came on the anvil because of the successive shooting incidents in the United States on Saturday. As per the think tank ‘The Gun Violence Archives’ claim, there has been a massive increase in mass shooting incidents. 600 mass shooting incidents were reported in the year 2020. The think tank has said that 260 mass shooting incidents have already been reported in the first five and a half months of this year.
