US and UK accuse Russia for NotPetya cyber attack

London/Moscow: The US and Britain have openly accused the Russian army of involvement in the NotPetya attacks that shocked many important countries including Ukraine. The US White House and the British Foreign Office has released independent statements blaming Russia for being responsible for the attacks. At the same time, a warning has been issued that Britain and its allies will not tolerate this kind of Russian interference. Russia has denied the allegations and has replied saying that these baseless claims are a part of the anti-Russia campaign.

Ukraine, Russia, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and even India had been affected by the attack. The hackers had interrupted all the computerised transactions and had asked for ransom in the form of bitcoins. Ukrainian banks, Russian fuel companies along with the private companies in Europe and the US had suffered losses in the attack. According to a report, the losses incurred due to the attacks are pegged at $ 53 billion.

There were talks about Russian involvement after the attacks. But, no country except the US and Ukraine had openly reacted. On Thursday, the White House in a statement it released accused Russia for being responsible for this attack, which is termed as the most destructive attack having caused immense losses. The White House press secretary, Sarah Sanders has said that the concerned cyberattack was a very irresponsible act and is a part of the Russian campaign against Ukraine.

The British Foreign Office has created a sensation by openly accusing Russia in their statement. In the beginning of the publication, it is stated that the Russian army is responsible for the NotPetya cyber attack. The investigation carried out by UK’s ‘National Cyber Security Centre’ in the matter has revealed this information, says the statement.

‘These cyberattacks have caused multimillion dollar losses to the European companies. The Russian government has caused Russia and the European countries to be each other’s adversaries. Russia is expected to behave like a responsible nation at the international level.’, criticised Lord Ahmed, UK’s ‘Foreign Office’ Minister. Gavin Williamson, the UK Defence Secretary also reprimanded Russia.

The senior leaders in the UK government have already alleged that Russia was responsible for the rising number of cyber attacks in UK as well as other countries in Europe. The US intelligence agencies had also warned that the Russian cyber attacks were the biggest danger for the US, in a hearing before the Senate.

The British allegations have been explicitly denied by Russia. Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the British allegations are baseless and lack evidence. He criticised that the concerned allegations are a part of the anti-Russia campaign, criticised Peskov.
