US President threatens to severe all economic ties with China

Washington: President Trump threatened to take a decisive step against China, saying that thinking about economic relations with China, there are multiple options available to the United States. If deemed fit, the opportunity to severe all the economic ties with China also may be exercised. This aggressive stance taken by the United States is significant, while the United States is giving indications that the talks may be restarted with China.

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held talks with Yang Jiechi, the Foreign Policy Chief of the ruling communist party of China at the Hawaiian Islands. This meeting becomes essential against the background of the US efforts to corner China on the Coronavirus pandemic and Hong Kong issues. At the same time, US Chief Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer had said during a Congressional hearing that severing all the economic ties with China in the current scenario was not a viable option.

President Trump has reacted to the statement made by Lighthizer. President Trump asserted that taking the ultimate step against China is possible by saying that the statement made by Robert Lighthizer, in Congress, cannot be termed as a mistake. According to Trump, this may have happened as he might have failed to explain his stand regarding China to the fullest.

This is the second time that President Trump has threatened to severe economic ties with China. Last month, President Trump had issued a similar threat while taking an aggressive stand against China over the Coronavirus pandemic. President Trump had threatened to severe all the economic ties with China as he was utterly disappointed with the Chinese position regarding the Coronavirus pandemic. He also had retorted that by severing ties, the United States would not lose anything and instead benefit by USD 500 billion.
