UN General Assembly President on a visit to India

New Delhi: UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Csaba Korosi has been on a three-day visit to India. This is the first visit of Korosi, who took over as the President of the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations four months ago. He chose India for this, which the Indian Ministry of External Affairs welcomed. Besides, before entering India, Korosi had categorically stated that the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) does not reflect the current world. India, too, had repeatedly raised the issue and staked a claim for permanent membership of the Security Council. Therefore, it seems that Korosi has presented India’s stance. At the same time, Korosi said he was visiting India with great expectations.

UN General Assembly President on a visit to IndiaThe importance of Korosi’s visit, who was a former diplomatic officer of Hungary and who became the President of the UNGA in September, has increased. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had invited Korosi to visit India. Korosi seems to have highlighted the importance of India at the international level by choosing India for his first foreign tour. Moreover, Korosi has praised India by saying that India is a leading country in the Global South. Besides this, Korosi claimed that the strategic approach of India and the policies of the United Nations complement each other.

In addition, there has been a similarity between India’s views on how the world should be and the policies of the United Nations. At present, India has been making efforts to solve the problems it faces. But the whole world has been facing these problems with a slight difference. In such a situation, Korosi believed that the world would benefit from India’s efforts to solve its problems. Also, Korosi drew attention to the fact that the whole world does not reflect in the UNSC, which has been strongly felt. Korosi retorted that only countries that were permanent members of the Security Council had been attacking other countries.

With the conflict in Ukraine and the global economy reeling from a recession, India has the presidency of the G20. Therefore, it seems India’s G20 presidency has been facing huge challenges; Korosi made aware of the hard reality. But the concept of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ proposed by India for the G20 is extremely broad, showing that India has been thinking about global responsibility, Korosi added. Therefore, Korosi has indicated that it will be possible for India to face these challenges.
