United Kingdom to sign the Free Trade Agreement with India, the biggest after Brexit: British PM Boris Johnson

London: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson claimed that the proposed free trade agreement signed by United Kingdom with India would be the most significant trade agreement. The deal is expected to be finalised by Diwali, and Prime Minister Johnson expressed confidence that the agreement could be signed even earlier. These statements made by the British Prime Minister during the meeting of heads of state of commonwealth countries show that United Kingdom is attaching huge importance to the trade relations with India.

There are 54 commonwealth countries, and the British Prime Minister underlined the Indian importance while addressing their meeting. India is the biggest among the commonwealth countries. Therefore, the free trade agreement being signed with India became the biggest and the most important trade agreement for United Kingdom. Prime Minister Johnson added that this is the biggest agreement being signed by United Kingdom with India after Brexit.

Prime Minister Johnson expressed confidence that the agreement would be finalised by Diwali. The British Prime Minister’s words that this most prominent and crucial agreement will be completed before Diwali underline the deal’s importance for India and United Kingdom. United Kingdom decided to exit from the European Union due to intense differences. The European Union had warned at that time that this had hit the British economy. But some people had claimed that United Kingdom would increase economic cooperation with countries like India and China to recover the losses caused by Brexit.

In the post-Brexit period, United Kingdom decided to strengthen its bilateral cooperation with India. Prime Minister Boris Johnson made special efforts in the matter. The actions were seen to be generating a response even from India. But, the bilateral cooperation took a back seat for some time because of the Coronavirus pandemic crisis in United Kingdom and India. However, both the countries have resolved to expedite the free trade agreement and finalise the deal before Diwali this year.

The British Prime Minister consistently expresses confidence that the agreement will be finalised before this Diwali. Meanwhile, as per the information shared by the British commerce department, the bilateral trade stands at $24 billion. Both the countries have set an objective of taking this trade to $50 billion after signing the free trade agreement.
