US fresh sanctions against Turkey, Turkey summons US Ambassador

Washington/Ankara: The United States has made fresh preparations to impose sanctions against Turkey, who is continuing to attack the Syrian Kurds. The US House of Representatives passed the proposal for imposition of fresh sanctions against Turkey. These sanctions are not only against the Turkish attacks on the Kurds but also against the Armenian genocide during the Ottoman regime. Objecting to these US sanctions, Turkey summoned the US Ambassador in Ankara.

The proposal for fresh sanctions was presented in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, presented this proposal for fresh sanctions accusing Turkey of human rights violations. Four hundred and six members voted in favour of the proposal and only 16 members voted against it. Two main accusations are made regarding the violations of human rights against Turkey.

The House held Turkey responsible for the Armenian genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman empire in 1915 and the attacks on the Syrian Kurds who assisted the NATO forces during their action in Syria. This proposal for fresh sanctions, passed in the House of Representatives, will soon be presented in the US Senate. The US President will take a decision on this matter only after that.

The passage of the bill will mean that there will be restrictions on the arms supplies to Turkey from the United States. At the same time, Turkey will not get any weapon manufacturing technologies from the United States. There could be restrictions on the travel of Turkish military and diplomatic officials and even on the economic interests.

Only two weeks ago, President Trump had announced the imposition of sanctions against Turkey. The United States had imposed these sanctions blaming Turkey of attacking the Syrian Kurds. But the United States had announced the withdrawal of sanctions, following the ceasefire agreed between Russia and Turkey.

Meanwhile, Turkey has severely criticised the proposal for sanctions passed by the US House of Representatives. Turkey referred to this as a despicable decision and the Turkish foreign ministry summoned the US Ambassador in Ankara.
