Paris/Bamako: – Two French soldiers were martyred in an IED blast, carried out by a terrorist organisation, in the Menaka region in Mali. One soldier was injured in the blast- his condition is said to be critical. This becomes the second attack on the French army in the last seven days. Three soldiers were killed in the previous attack. The responsibility of that blast had been accepted by an Al Qaeda linked terrorist organisation.
The French army’s Second Hussar Division was on surveillance and patrolling duty in the Menaka region in north-eastern Mali. During this patrolling, an IED exploded, killing two soldiers on the spot and injuring one. Woman military officer Sergeant Yvonne Huynh and Brigadier Loic Risser were killed in the explosion. Huynh was the first woman official to be posted in Mali, whereas, it was the third posting in Mali, for Brigadier Loic Risser.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed grief over the French soldiers’ death and asserted that the counter-terrorism campaign would continue. After the casualties in the attack on Saturday, the number of French casualties in Mali has reached 50. France started with military deployment in Mali since 2013; more than 5,000 soldiers have been deployed so far. European countries other than France, also have deployed their military units in Mali.
